The Derecho storm that rolled through Virginia on June 29 left thousands of memebers without power. REC crews began restoring power as quickly as possible braving the heat and working 16 hour shifts until power was fully restored.
Dan Rogier, managing director of AEP Transmission East, talks about recovering from the June 29 storm from a transmission system perspective.
In the US, tropical storms, like Hurricane Irene, and winter storms, like the recent Nor'easters, result in power outages that affect millions of customers. The storms have a severe impact on utilities' reliability and restoring power services costs millions of dollars. To ensure the highest standard of reliability and storm restoration, utilities are turning to intelligent data made available through smarter system integration. By integrating their outage management systems (OMS), distribution management systems (DMS) and geographical information systems (GIS) with advanced smart meter infrastructure, utilities can access a wealth of data that enables them to make better decisions about restoring power, and improve logistics and customer communications. PA's records show that top utilities in the US are able to restore on average 50 per cent of customers one quarter of the way through a storm event. We are currently working with major US utilities to help implement and integrate smart technology, moving them towards and beyond these performance standards. PA has also been working with utilities for over 25 years to develop, share and recognise best practices in utility performance and reliability. For instance, our benchmarking programme in transmission and distribution and customer services are the most comprehensive, objective and useful performance benchmarking study available to the utility industry, while our annual ReliabilityOne and ServiceOne awards recognise ...
